    Książka jest zbiorem prac zgromadzonych z okazji międzynarodowego kongresu naukowego, który odbył się w Akademii Muzycznej w Gdańsku, był zaś poświęcony edukacji muzycznej w nowoczesnej Europie.

Celem jego działania jest przekazanie istoty zagadnienia uczniowi […] Jednakże od lat akcentuje się w procesie edukacyjnym rolę mocno umotywowanego samokształcenia. Wynikają z tego daleko idące konsekwencje. Ich wpływ odczuwa się dziś na zwykłych lekcjach muzyki. Wymagania stawiane nauczycielom muzyki stają się coraz bardziej złożone, niekiedy wręcz niejasne, za to z reguły coraz większe. Nauczycielska rola słabnie.
